Winter care for your trailer can be a difficult task to motivate
yourself to do, but rest assured, when something goes wrong with your boat trailer, you'll
know it.
- Support the trailer on blocks during the off season, so that some of
the weight is removed from the springs. Spin the wheels and check for bearing wear or
brakes which are dragging.
- Make sure the bearing buddies or wheel bearings are greased
appropriately. The cap should not bottom out, nor should it be overfilled.
- Block the tongue of the trailer and take the weight off of the tongue
jack. Make sure the trailer is tilted towards the back and that the transom plug is open.
- Back off the tension on the winch.
- Check your brake fluid and top it up, if it is hydraulic.
- If you have a steel trailer which is not galvanized, ad you use the
boat in the salt water, check the trailer over for potential rust problems.
- Touch up outer paint surfaces with suitable paint.
- Check tire wear, wheels, lug nuts. Look for sidewall damage (you know
when you cut the corner that last time!)
- Get a spray can of white lithium grease and spray away on metal
surfaces, like the tongue jack, safety chains, winch, hitch mechanism.
- Wrap up some of the rust prone surfaces in plastic and tape them off
with electricians tap or something similar.
Make a list of needed repairs which can be done in
the off season, so when boating season arrives again you are ready to go as quickly as
possible.
